Author Guidelines

The responsibilities of the authors

Authors are welcome to inform the editors about any special characteristics they would like to have taken into consideration.

Authors have a responsibility to inform the editors about the existence of other papers using the same dataset as the paper they submit to IAR, along with a brief description of how the submission differs from the other work.

Authors are tasked with ensuring that submitted manuscripts:

  • be submitted once the author(s) feel that they are of publishable standard – we explicitly warn against premature submission;
  • present entirely original, unique work. Any empirical work should be verifiable and comply with the journals open data requirements;
  • duly acknowledge the work of others, through appropriate citations or quotes and permission must be obtained if necessary;
  • not be plagiarised in any way;
  • not be sent to more than one journal concurrently;
  • cite relevant literature to support its claims;
  • ensure their work uses inclusive language throughout and is not discriminatory in any way.

All authors must agree to the manuscript submission to the journal and to each revision before submission.  Anyone who has made a substantive contribution should be included as a co-author. The addition or removal of a co-author must be agreed by all co-authors. The editor in charge of the submission must be notified of any changes to the co-authorship of the manuscript. All authors (copied in) need to notify and explain the reasons for the change to the handling editor.

Double-anonymous peer review

To facilitate the  review process, we ask that you provide your title page (including author details) and anonymized manuscript (excluding author details) separately in your submission.

The title page should include:

  • Article title
  • Author name(s)
  • Affiliation(s)
  • Acknowledgements
  • Declaration of Interest statement
  • Corresponding author address (full address is required)
  • Corresponding author email address

The anonymized manuscript should contain the main body of your paper including:

  • References
  • Figures
  • Tables

As part of your submission, you will be asked to provide:

  • Title page
  • Abstract: Your manuscript should include a long abstract which will be used as an “entry point” into the research for those perhaps unfamiliar with the arena or academic writing more generally",.  The abstract should explain the purpose of the research, the theoretical underpinning and its conclusion(s).
  • Keywords: Manuscript can contain up to 8 keywords.
  • Research data: We are committed to supporting the storage of, access to and discovery of research data.
  • Acknowledgements: These should be included on the anonymised title page.
  • References: APA 7th edition should be used for references. We discourage over-referencing.

Language Policy

We will try to find an editor whose language matches the language of the lead author regardless of the submission language.

IAR will strive to enable the submission of manuscripts in French and Spanish.  If you would like to submit in any other language than English, please contact Christine Cooper to discuss this possibility.

After completing the review process, authors must send a final version in English as well as in the original language.  Final acceptance is conditional on a clear English translation.  We recommend the use of a professional English editor or a proof reader.  For those papers / pieces submitted in other languages, supplementary material will be published with the final version of the file in its original language. The citation format of the files will refer to the published version in English.

IAR allows the use of generative AI for translation purposes, but the final English version of the paper must be approved by the handling editor.

Anonymising your Submission Files

As we operate on a double-anonymous peer review basis, it is important the files you submit do not have any identifying information, such as the author name or affiliation, in the file or metadata.

The authors of the document should remove personal information from the file properties by taking the following steps:

  • Microsoft Word for Windows:
    • Go to File
    • Select Info
    • Click on Check for Issues
    • Click on Inspect Document
    • In the Document Inspector dialog box, select the check boxes to choose the type of hidden content that you want inspected.
    • Click Remove All
    • Click Close
    • Save the document
  • Microsoft Word for MacOS:
    • Go to Tools
    • Click Protect Document
    • Select Remove personal information for this file on save
    • Click OK and save the file
  • PDF:
    • Go to File
    • Select Properties
    • Remove any name in the author field
    • Click OK
    • Save the document

Submission Preparation Checklist

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.

Articles

The journal publishes academic articles, for these, it will follow a double-anonymous review process. These submissions, if accepted, should be accompanied by a long (1 – 2 page) abstract written in plain language which will be used as an “entry point” into the research for those perhaps unfamiliar with the arena or academic writing more generally.  While there is no word limit; we prefer pieces of 10,000 words.

Reflective Essays

The journal publishes shorter contemporary political, polemical or reflective pieces. These will be reviewed by two editors who may also seek advice from others to help in the assessment process. This is a double-blind review process, but one which enable decisions to be made more quickly.

Alternative & Innovative Formats

Including, photos (with commentary); videos; comic strips; poems; documentaries. These will be considered by expert advisors in their fields.

Privacy Statement
